For decades, the road to an NCAA Women's Soccer Championship seemed to run through the same familiar powers. North Carolina built the sport's defining dynasty, programs such as Stanford and Florida State became blue bloods, and now the 2026 season is busy writing its own chapter.

Michigan State owns the No. 1 spot. UNC is back near the top, and unbeaten Vanderbilt has crashed the national-title conversation as the 64-team NCAA Tournament picture begins to take shape.

Selection day is still weeks away, but we're freezing the season on Oct. 7 and handing out all 64 spots today.

This is a FloCollege projection using current conference standings and the NCAA Women's Soccer RPI through games Oct. 5 to answer one question: If the season ended today, who's in?

How Does The NCAA Women's Soccer Tournament Work?

The NCAA Division I Women's Soccer Tournament features 64 teams.

For 2026, the field includes 31 automatic qualifiers and 33 at-large selections. Unlike the men's tournament, all 64 teams begin play in the first round, with the field eventually whittled down to the Women's College Cup.

From there, it's win or go home until a national champion is crowned.

How We Projected The NCAA Women's Soccer Tournament Field

For this projection, FloCollege awarded each automatic bid to the team currently leading its conference.

When teams were tied for first place, the team with the better NCAA RPI received our projected AQ.

After locking in the 31 projected automatic qualifiers, the remaining 33 spots were filled primarily using the NCAA Women's Soccer RPI through games Oct. 5.

In other words, this isn't simply the top 64 teams in RPI.

Projected NCAA Women's Soccer Automatic Qualifiers

Here are the 31 teams currently holding our projected automatic bids:

Automatic qualification completely changes the shape of the field. Michigan State sits at No. 1 in the RPI and would comfortably be in regardless, while Texas Southern sits at No. 316 but would make our tournament as the projected SWAC representative.

Projected NCAA Women's Soccer At-Large Bids

Once those 31 projected AQs are removed, these are our 33 at-large selections:

Projected Top NCAA Women's Soccer Seeds

We're not building a full bracket here, but if the tournament started today, these are the teams we'd put at the front of the seeding conversation based primarily on the current NCAA RPI:

  1. Michigan State (9-1-2) - AQ, Big Ten
  2. North Carolina (11-1) - AQ, ACC
  3. Vanderbilt (11-0-1) - At-Large
  4. Wake Forest (10-1) - At-Large
  5. Alabama (12-1) - AQ, SEC
  6. Baylor (10-1-1) - AQ, Big 12
  7. Ohio State (9-1-1) - At-Large
  8. West Virginia (7-1-2) - At-Large
  9. Virginia (6-2-2) - At-Large
  10. UCLA (8-3-1) - At-Large
  11. Texas Tech (7-0-4) - At-Large
  12. Stanford (7-2-2) - At-Large
  13. Texas (7-2-3) - At-Large
  14. South Carolina (10-1-1) - At-Large
  15. Harvard (8-2-1) - AQ, Ivy League
  16. Colorado (8-3-1) - At-Large

Just Outside The Field

San Diego State - RPI No. 42

San Diego State is 7-3-1 and sits directly behind Memphis in the current RPI, making the Aztecs our first team outside the 64-team field.

Iowa - RPI No. 43

Iowa is 6-3-4 and only two RPI spots beyond our cutoff. There isn't much separating the final at-large selections from the first teams left home.

Charlotte - RPI No. 44

Charlotte is 6-4-1 and remains firmly within striking distance of the field as the American race continues.

Washington - RPI No. 45

At 9-1-2, Washington owns the best overall record among our first four teams out. The Huskies are a perfect example of why this projection could change quickly as conference play continues.

What Stands Out About The Projected NCAA Tournament Field?

Automatic qualification has an enormous impact on the women's field.

Our projected AQs range from Michigan State at RPI No. 1 all the way to Texas Southern at No. 316. That pushes the effective at-large cutoff all the way up to Memphis at No. 41, leaving several teams with strong records outside the tournament.

Washington might be the most eye-catching example. The Huskies are 9-1-2, but at No. 45 in the current RPI, they miss our Oct. 7 field.

Of course, nobody is booking a trip through the NCAA Tournament on Oct. 7.

There is still plenty of soccer to play, conference races to settle and résumés to build before the NCAA selection committee makes the real decisions. But if the season ended today, these are the 64 teams we'd send to the NCAA Tournament.
