What if Selection Monday came six weeks early?
If the NCAA Men's Soccer Tournament started today, Clemson and South Carolina would sit at the front of the line, Georgetown and SMU would be chasing first-round byes, and teams such as Stanford and Marquette would be fighting over the final tickets to the dance.

The real Men's Soccer NCAA Tournament field won't be revealed for weeks, but we're calling the season on Oct. 6 and filling all 48 spots today. This is not an official NCAA bracket.
It's a FloCollege projection using current conference standings, the NCAA Men's Soccer RPI through games Oct. 5 and the NCAA's broader selection criteria to answer one question: If the season ended today, who's going dancing?
How Does The NCAA Men's Soccer Tournament Work?
The NCAA Division I Men's Soccer Tournament features 48 teams.
For 2026, we're projecting 23 automatic qualifiers and 25 at-large selections. The top 16 teams in the field are seeded and receive first-round byes, while the other 32 teams begin play in the first round.
From there, it's single-elimination soccer all the way to the Men's College Cup.
How We Projected The NCAA Men's Soccer Tournament Field
For this projection, FloCollege awarded each automatic bid to the team currently leading its conference.
When teams were tied for first place, the team with the better NCAA RPI received the projected AQ.
After locking in the 23 projected automatic qualifiers, the remaining 25 spots were filled primarily using the NCAA RPI through games Oct. 5. Teams around the cut line also were evaluated using résumé factors beyond RPI.
In other words, this isn't simply the top 48 teams in RPI.
Projected NCAA Men's Soccer Automatic Qualifiers
Here are the 23 teams currently holding our projected automatic bids:
- America East: UAlbany — RPI No. 25
- American: Missouri State — RPI No. 19
- Atlantic 10: Saint Louis — RPI No. 44
- ACC: SMU — RPI No. 6
- ASUN: North Florida — RPI No. 63
- Big East: Georgetown — RPI No. 3
- Big South: High Point — RPI No. 32
- Big Ten: Indiana — RPI No. 8
- Big West: UC Santa Barbara — RPI No. 46
- CAA: UNC Wilmington — RPI No. 12
- Horizon League: Oakland — RPI No. 102
- Ivy League: Cornell — RPI No. 15
- Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference: Fairfield — RPI No. 70
- Missouri Valley: Evansville — RPI No. 108
- Mountain West: Grand Canyon — RPI No. 91
- Northeast Conference: Fairleigh Dickinson — RPI No. 47
- Ohio Valley Conference: SIU Edwardsville — RPI No. 147
- Pac-12: California Baptist — RPI No. 54
- Patriot League: Boston University — RPI No. 81
- Southern Conference: UNC Greensboro — RPI No. 90
- Summit League: Kansas City — RPI No. 7
- Sun Belt: Georgia Southern — RPI No. 37
- West Coast Conference: Portland — RPI No. 60
This is where automatic qualification completely changes the tournament picture. SIU Edwardsville, for example, sits at No. 147 in the RPI but would make our field as the projected OVC representative.
Projected NCAA Men's Soccer At-Large Bids
Once those 23 projected AQs are removed, these are our 25 at-large selections:
- Clemson (9-2) — RPI No. 1
- South Carolina (7-1-2) — RPI No. 2
- Maryland (6-2-1) — RPI No. 4
- Pittsburgh (6-2-2) — RPI No. 5
- Michigan State (7-2-1) — RPI No. 9
- Charlotte (5-1-3) — RPI No. 10
- Wisconsin (5-2-3) — RPI No. 11
- Xavier (7-0-2) — RPI No. 13
- Akron (6-1-2) — RPI No. 14
- Louisville (8-1-2) — RPI No. 16
- Creighton (10-0-3) — RPI No. 17
- West Virginia (5-1-3) — RPI No. 18
- Vermont (7-1-3) — RPI No. 20
- Syracuse (7-3-1) — RPI No. 21
- San Diego (6-2-3) — RPI No. 22
- Princeton (6-2-2) — RPI No. 23
- UCLA (5-1-4) — RPI No. 24
- Notre Dame (5-3-3) — RPI No. 26
- Rutgers (5-4-1) — RPI No. 27
- Penn State (4-1-2) — RPI No. 28
- Washington (6-3-2) — RPI No. 29
- North Carolina (5-2-3) — RPI No. 30
- Wake Forest (7-3-1) — RPI No. 32
- Oregon State Men's Soccer (5-1-4) — RPI No. 34
- Stanford (8-2-1) — RPI No. 35
Projected Top 16 Seeds
If the tournament started today, these would be our projected 16 seeded teams and first-round bye recipients:
- Clemson (9-2) — At-Large
- South Carolina (7-1-2) — At-Large
- Georgetown (9-1-1) — AQ, Big East
- Maryland (6-2-1) — At-Large
- Pittsburgh (6-2-2) — At-Large
- SMU (9-0-1) — AQ, ACC
- Kansas City (7-1-2) — AQ, Summit League
- Indiana (9-0-2) — AQ, Big Ten
- Michigan State (7-2-1) — At-Large
- Charlotte (5-1-3) — At-Large
- Wisconsin (5-2-3) — At-Large
- UNCW (7-2-1) — AQ, CAA
- Xavier (7-0-2) — At-Large
- Akron (6-1-2) — At-Large
- Cornell (6-2) — AQ, Ivy League
- Louisville (8-1-2) — At-Large
The top 16 seeds receive first-round byes, making the seed line one of the most important dividing lines in the 48-team field.
Just Outside the Field
Marquette — RPI No. 31
Yes, the No. 31 RPI team is outside our field.
Marquette is 6-4-1, but its 1-3 Big East record gives us pause compared with Stanford's résumé. Losses to Georgetown, Creighton, and Xavier leave the Golden Eagles as our toughest omission.
Memphis — RPI No. 36
Memphis is 4-2-4 and owns a valuable win over North Carolina, but the Tigers don't quite have enough to jump the teams immediately ahead of them.
Northwestern — RPI No. 38
Northwestern's 4-0 win over Maryland might be one of the best individual results among the bubble teams. The Wildcats' 5-4-1 overall record, however, keeps them just outside.
Old Dominion — RPI No. 39
Old Dominion is 8-3 and has the record of a tournament team, but the Monarchs currently sit behind several teams with stronger overall résumés.
What Stands Out About The Projected NCAA Tournament Field?
The first thing is just how much automatic qualification matters.
Our projected AQ list includes teams ranging from Kansas City at No. 7 in the RPI all the way to SIU Edwardsville at No. 147. Those lower-ranked automatic qualifiers squeeze the at-large field considerably and push the effective RPI bubble into the 30s.
Of course, nobody is punching a ticket to the College Cup on Oct. 6.
There is still plenty of soccer to play, conference races to settle and résumés to build before the NCAA selection committee makes the real decisions. But if the season ended today, these are the 48 teams we'd send to the NCAA Tournament.
