D1 Men's Soccer Rankings Week 4: Michigan Upsets Indiana, Wolverines Rise

Michigan beats No. 1 Indiana to climb to No. 8 in the D1 men’s soccer rankings. Wake Forest holds No. 1, and Stanford rebounds to No. 3.

University of Michigan beat previous top-ranked Indiana University in week 4, propelling the Wolverines to No. 8.

Despite a 4-0-2 season record, Michigan had only appeared on the top 25 list once before, at the bottom of poll two. In the away game against Indiana, the home team scored first. By halftime, the score was tied 1-1. 

In the 71st minute, Michigan found its second goal as Joao Paulo Ramos fed the ball into the penalty box for Kyle Pierson to head it into the net. Soon after, Grayson Elmquist doubled the lead off an assist from Dylan Davis.

Indiana managed another goal but couldn’t settle before the clock ran out. The game marked Michigan’s first win against a No. 1 team in program history and Indiana’s only loss of the season. 

The match also served as a Big Ten opener, helping Michigan start at second in the conference standings.

Wake Forest claims No. 1, though it left last week on a draw. Stanford is moving back up after last week’s loss to Louisville dropped its No. 1 status. The Cardinals now sit at No. 3 following back-to-back wins against Syracuse and Saint Mary’s.
