Stanford has been dethroned. The Cardinal met their first loss of the season, falling 1-0 to the University of Louisville. The match dropped the previously No. 1 team to eighth and carried Louisville from unranked all the way to sixth in this week’s poll.

Louisville scored a goal in the first half and Stanford was unable to answer. With 16 shots and four shots on goal, Stanford couldn’t manage to put any points on the board. This is in stark contrast to Louisville’s four total shots and two shots on goal. Ultimately, Louisville won the game through defense. Louisville’s Alex Sventanoff handled each shot with agility, saving all four attempts.

The Cardinal is just the latest link in Louisville’s streak of blanking all of its opponents this season. Stanford previously held a 2-0-0 record against Louisville, the latest win coming in 2016. Louisville’s recent win shows growth for the program and the strength of its current campaign. The game was doubly important as it was the first ACC game for both teams, meaning Louisville got a major NCAA Division I ranking bump and now sits atop the ACC standings.

Marshall, which is experiencing a three-game draw streak, slips from second to 10th. Clemson replaces it at No. 2, right under Indiana, which claims the top spot. The University of Portland continues its win streak (5-0-0), earning a jump from 24th to ninth this week.

The University of Vermont started at No. 1 in the preseason and in poll one before bowing to Stanford in poll two. The team now stands at 13th. It has remained without a loss, but its 3-0-2 record shows the certainty missing from its game.
