CSUMB Soars in CCAA Women's Soccer Standings After Week 1 Shutout

Cal State Monterey Bay Women’s Soccer jumped to No. 2 in the CCAA after a 5-0 win. Cal Poly Pomona holds No. 1. San Francisco State and UC Merced climb.

Cal State Monterey Bay (CSUMB) women’s soccer team stunned in week 1 of college play. 

The team began the season ranked No. 7 in the CCAA preseason polls and has shot straight to second after just one game. The Otters came in hot with a 5-0 shutout against Fresno Pacific at Ramirez Field, Fresno’s home turf. The game marked CSUMB’s highest-scoring match since 2022. In their second game of the season on Sept. 8, the team will be able to show off their home advantage against Hawai’i Hilo.

Cal Poly Pomona stayed on top following a 3-1 win against Azusa Pacific in their season opener. The team also played Fresno Pacific for a 4-1 win. At minute 48, the game was tied, though Cal Poly Pomona restored the lead by minute fifty-nine. This game further highlights CSUMB’s strength, as they fought for a complete shutout against the same team.

Others who made big jumps this week include San Francisco State and UC Merced. San Francisco State sat at the bottom of the preseason poll but is now solidly in fifth after a 1-1 tie against Menlo. UC Merced also played to a draw against Simon Fraser, earning a jump from eleventh to sixth.
