The 2022 BIG EAST Softball all-conference teams and major awards were released on Wednesday ahead of the BIG EAST Softball Championships Presented by Jeep, which begins Thursday. Creighton’s Kailey Wilson became the first Bluejay to be named BIG EAST Player of the Year, while Alyssa Graves unanimously became the first Butler hurler to win BIG EAST Pitcher of the Year. DePaul’s Maranda Gutierrez took home BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year for the third consecutive season. After winning the conference regular season title, the UConn coaches were honored as the BIG EAST Coaching Staff of the Year.

The point of no return in determining the BIG EAST contenders from the pretenders has passed.

If there’s something that can be taken away from the past two seasons of college basketball, it’s that anything can happen.

Back like they never left, UConn dominated the Big East last season, sporting a perfect 18-0 record in conference play, after ending their seven-year hiatus in the American Athletic Conference. The undefeated conference mark propelled the Huskies into their seemingly annual, deep NCAA Tournament run, as UConn secured their 13th consecutive Final Four appearance last season.

For the last four years, the Big East men's soccer conversation has been dominated by one team. The Georgetown Hoyas have had commanded the Big East since 2017. Despite ceding the conference crown to Seton Hall during the COVID-19-shortened spring 2021 season, the Hoyas are primed to continue their dominance in the fall of 2021. The Big East is far from a one-pony show, though; the conference in its entirety boasts challengers aplenty to the Hoyas' supremacy.

The uneven and unpredictable Big East women’s basketball season comes to a conclusion this week with the conference tournament set to begin on Friday. Some teams (UConn, Marquette and Butler) played an 18-game conference schedule. Another, Xavier, played just 10. Everyone else landed somewhere in between. 

Some Big East teams have played 10 games this season. Others have managed to get in just five. 

With all the postponements, cancelations, and programs on pause, it's difficult to say exactly where we are in the Big East season. Some programs have played a robust schedule, others are just getting started. But it's not too early to dig into the stats and try to make sense of where each team sits in the standings.
