NEWS AND NOTES

CHARLESTON, CHARLESTON CHAMPS

Charleston’s stellar start to the season now includes some hardware. The Cougars defeated Virginia Tech on Sunday, 77-75, to win the Charleston Classic.

The Cougars picked up wins over Davidson, Colorado State and Virginia Tech in the event.

Charleston is 5-1 to begin the year, including wins over five NCAA Tournament teams and three defending conference champions (ACC, A10, SoCon), with the lone setback coming at No. 1 North Carolina.

MONDAY: CONTINUING TO FEAST

Monday’s four-game slate begins in Florida, with Drexel opening its stay at the Gulf Coast Showcase against UT Arlington.

Monmouth visits defending Patriot League champ Colgate, UNCW hosts Mount Olive and Hampton begins a two-game trip to Santa Barbara against the host Gauchos.

TRIPLE TROUBLE

The trio of Towson, Charleston and Hofstra has emerged as contenders in the season’s early going, with Towson at 4-0, Charleston at 5-1 and Hofstra at 4-1.

The three teams have combined to defeat three defending conference champions, two preseason favorites and four Atlantic 10 members.

MANIC MONDAY

Charleston and Hofstra both were victorious Monday night with stellar performances being enough to counteract two of the top-5 single-game individual scoring performances nationally this season.

Reyne Smith scored 29 points and made eight 3-pointers in Charleston’s overtime win over Richmond, with the Spiders’ Tyler Burton racking up 38.

On Long Island, Aaron Estrada scored 33 points to push Hofstra past a 44-point effort from GW’s James Bishop.

POLLING PLACES

Charleston is receiving votes in both national polls this week and slotted as high as No. 16 on one voter’s AP Top 25 ballot.

CAA teams have 10 games scheduled against teams ranked in this week’s AP Top 25, and there are 13 games in total against teams ranked or receiving votes.

Towson is No. 7, and Hofstra is No. 16 in the most recent Mid-Major Top 25, while Charleston and UNCW are receiving votes, with the next poll to be released Monday night.

CAA teams will play 26 games against non-league foes ranked or receiving votes in that poll.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS

Three of the league’s top 8 scorers in the early going come from new CAA members.

In addition, Hampton’s Jordan Nesbitt leads the league with 5.7 assists per game, and Monmouth’s Myles Foster is second with 8.2 rebounds per game.
