GSC Men's Championship: Christian Brothers Wins In PKs To Advance To NCAA

Christian Brothers knocked off No. 1 seed West Florida in PKs to secure the Bucs' first conference championship since 2012, and a spot in the NCAA Tourney.

For the first time since 2012, Christian Brothers lifted the Gulf South Conference Men’s Soccer Championship trophy, after beating top-seeded West Florida 5-4 in a penalty shootout.


With the result, Christian Brothers earned the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA regional championship. Its opponent, the West Florida’s postseason future will be announced Monday afternoon during the NCAA Division II Men’s Soccer Selection Show at 5:30 pm CT on NCAA.com.

CBU senior Max Klink was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player and All-Tournament Team. The Bucs’ also had Marco Osti, Lucho Galizzi and Caleb Tammi on the All-Tournament Team.

The rest of the All-Tournament Team included Eduardo Queiroz, Caue Novaes and Keegan Lynch from West Florida, Mississippi College’s Joshua Davies and Nicolas Milot, and Auburn Montgomery’s Jamos Hauk and Phillip Spickenbaum.

Klink finished the game with six saves, plus a save in the shootout. Osti meanwhile had the game-tying goal in the 71st minute.

Novaes tallied game’s opening goal in the 62nd minute with help from Jaime Gullien.

Tied at 1-1 after 90 minutes the teams went to overtime. During the second extra period Klink turned away an attempt from Keegan Ancelin in the 105th minute to keep the match level. Galizzi then put an attempt on goal in the dying seconds but it was enough as time expired.

In the shootout, both teams converted their attempts in the first two rounds. Then in the third, Klink turned away Novaes’ attempt, allowing Galizzi to convert from the spot and give CBU the advantage. The stop from Klink eventually was the decision maker.
