Four Teams Split CAA Women's Soccer Major Awards For 2022 Season

Four teams – Drexel, Monmouth, Towson and William & Mary – earned major regular-season awards for 2022 in CAA women’s soccer, with the Dragons and Hawks collecting multiple pieces of hardware.

Drexel’s honors included Attacking Player of the Year for Delaney Lappin and Midfielder of the Year for Annalena O’Reilly, while Monmouth’s Jesi Rossman was voted Defensive Player of the Year, and the two head coaches – Drexel’s Ray Goon and Monmouth’s Kylee Flynn – earned Co-Coach of the Year distinction.

Towson’s Riley Melendez is the Goalkeeper of the Year in the CAA, while William & Mary’s Ivey Crain earned Rookie of the Year selection.

Voting was conducted by the league’s 12 head coaches following Sunday’s games.

The four league members to collect a major award matches the highest total in the last 14 seasons.

Monmouth is the first CAA member to win regular season major honors in its inaugural campaign in the league since Hofstra in 2002.

Lappin powered Drexel with 10 goals and 23 points – both good for second in the CAA.

The South Jersey native’s 12 points in league action (five goals, two assists) helped the Dragons to a return to the CAA Championship for the first time since 2018, the No. 2 seed and hosting rights this weekend for one half of the bracket.

O’Reilly did the majority of her damage in conference play, tallying 12 points (four goals, four assists) in conference action and 19 on the year.

The combination of Lappin and O’Reilly contributed to Drexel’s 35 goals in the regular season, which ranked third in the league. They are the first Dragons to win CAA major awards for a player since Christiana Ogunsami was named Co-Defender of the Year in 2016.

The conference’s top two defenses were represented in the awards.

Rossman and Monmouth limited opponents to seven goals in league play and 11 in the regular season, while Melendez stymied foes to the tune of a 0.457 goals-against average that ranks eighth nationally and .877 save percentage that places 13th, along with a nation’s-best 11 shutouts.

On the team side, Towson (third) and Monmouth (22nd) rank among the nation’s stingiest back lines. Melendez is the first Tiger to win a major CAA honor since Towson joined the league for the 2002 season.

Crain concluded the regular season tied for third among Division I freshmen with nine goals and second with 23 points.

The freshman forward scored in five of nine league games, including a brace against defending league champ Hofstra.

Crain is the first W&M player to capture a major conference award since Clara Logsdon was Co-Defender of the Year in 2016 and the first Tribe Rookie of the Year since Katie Hogwood in 2003.

Goon delivered the Dragons back to postseason soccer after a 7-0-3 start to the fall, while Flynn steered the Hawks to a regular season title in Monmouth’s first year in the CAA – and her first year at the helm after being promoted during the summer. Goon’s award is his third in Philadelphia after winning in 2012 and 2016.

Drexel, Northeastern and Towson each collected two first-team All-CAA selections, and eight league members were represented on the first team. Eleven CAA teams collected multiple honors on the three all-conference squads.

The 2022 CAA Women’s Soccer Championship presented by Primis begins Thursday, with quarterfinal sites hosted by Monmouth and Drexel.

The two teams to advance from the opening weekend will square off the first weekend of November. All seven games of the Championship can be seen on FloFC.
