WEEKLY AWARDS

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Scott Vatne, Elon

Sophomore | Midfield | Klepp, Norway / Bryne Videregaende Skole

Vatne contributed a goal and an assist to lift Elon to a 3-1 victory at Hofstra in a battle for first place.

The sophomore from Norway set up Victor Stromsten to make it 2-0 Elon in the 80th minute and scored a goal of his own 114 seconds later for an insurmountable advantage in a rematch of the 2021 CAA Championship final.

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Steven Cahill, Charleston

Graduate Student | Midfielder | Cambridge, England / Bottisham Village College

Cahill spearheaded a Charleston defense that recorded a pair of shutouts last week with a scoreless draw against NC State and 1-0 win over Northeastern.

He played all 180 minutes and helped Charleston stay undefeated (5-0-2) at Patriots Point this fall.

CO-ROOKIE OF THE WEEK

Lucas Caldas, William & Mary

Freshman | Forward | Sterling, Virginia / Dominion
Caldas’ first career goal propelled William & Mary to a 2-1 win over No. 10 Wake Forest on Tuesday night in Williamsburg.

The freshman from Loudoun County slid home the game-winner in the 75th minute for the CAA’s first win over an ACC opponent this fall.

CO-ROOKIE OF THE WEEK

Sam Donnellan, Delaware

Freshman | Forward | Newcastle, Australia

Donnellan’s second-half brace kept Delaware’s postseason hopes alive in a 3-2 win over Stony Brook.

The freshman from Australia broke a 1-1 tie early in the second half and struck again seven minutes later with what would prove to be the game-winner.

NEWS AND NOTES

TURNING UP THE HEAT

Elon’s 3-1 victory at Hofstra in Saturday’s rematch of the 2021 CAA final put the Phoenix alone in first place and clinched a CAA Championship berth for this November.

UNCW also earned a spot in the six-team field with a victory, while Hofstra punched its ticket by virtue of tiebreakers.

The remaining seven teams are mathematically in contention, with two games remaining.

Drexel, Charleston and William & Mary would be the teams in if the season ended today, but Monmouth, Northeastern, Stony Brook and Delaware still have opportunities to move up during the season’s last two Saturdays.

UNCW’s tournament berth is its conference-record 27th into the CAA Championship.

POWER BALL

William & Mary defeated No. 10 Wake Forest last Tuesday, and Charleston earned a scoreless draw against NC State. The Tribe’s victory was its eighth over an ACC team in the last 13 seasons.

Three CAA teams face ACC opponents this Tuesday, with Elon hosting North Carolina, William & Mary headed to NC State and Hofstra facing No. 24 Virginia in a nationally televised game on ACC Network. In other action, Drexel hosts No. 16 Penn.

RESUME WORKSHOP

The CAA is the No. 9 conference in this week’s NCAA RPI. Elon leads the way at 33 while Hofstra is at 44.

The conference is 6-1-4 against the No. 8 league, the Atlantic 10.

WE CAN BE ZEROES

CAA defenses and goalkeepers have been among some of the nation’s best in 2022.

UNCW’s Gabriel Perrotta ranks ninth nationally with an .844 save percentage, while Elon’s Ryan Bilichuk is 21st at .812.

Bilichuk is seventh in the nation with a 0.500 goals-against average and Elon has earned Defensive Player of the Week in four of the season’s first seven weeks thanks to four different players - Bilichuk, Vemund Hole Vik, Kasper Lehm, and Myson Darden.

Bilichuk leads the nation with eight shutouts, while Monmouth’s Eryk Dymora and Perrotta are tied for eighth with six each. Perrotta broke UNCW’s career shutouts record on Saturday.

ELIOT GOAL-THORP

Hofstra’s Eliot Goldthorp is tied for second in the nation in goals (10), points (23) and game-winning goals (five).

Goldthorp’s first goal in a Hofstra uniform was an opening-night game-winner at 89:59 that earned a spot on SportsCenter.
