Wayne Rooney already has two highlight moments against Orlando City, but D.C. United's striker added to that list on Wednesday night, as United beat the Lions 1-0 at Audi Field. From his own half, Rooney scored the game's only goal in the 10th minute, scoring the first goal from beyond midfield since at least 2011 in MLS.

Rooney's ninth goal of the season gave United their first win since May 12, when they defeated Sporting Kansas City by the same scoreline.

United had most of their first choice starting lineup available after a three week break in MLS play. Ben Olsen was missing just Paul Arriola and Junior Moreno due to international callups, with the pair replaced by Chris Durkin and Ulises Segura in the starting line up.

Looking to end a five game winless run in league play, the Black-and-Red got off to a quick start in the game, with Rooney heading just wide in the 7th minute. Lucas Rodriguez then went close a minute later, firing over the frame after a combination with Luciano Acosta.

And then came the outlandish goal from Rooney in the 10th minute. Russell Canouse cleared the ball from his own box, but Orlando failed in gaining possession in midfield. The ball bounced off of Sacha Kljestan into the path of Rooney, who immediately spotted Brian Rowe off his line. Rowe just about got back, but could only watch Rooney's 65 yard strike sail over his outstretched hand.

The goal might have caught Orlando off guard, but the visitors were quick to react, and get themselves settled. Nani forced a save out of Bill Hamid in the 16th minute, before Carlos Ascues just missed the target on a one-timer from outside the box.

Ascues was able to round Hamid on an entry pass from Chris Mueller, but could not pull the trigger from a tight angle. Eventually, United recovered defensively, and snuffed out the opportunity.

In the 30th minute, Frederic Brillant just missed getting on the end of a free kick from Rooney, forcing Rowe to parry the ball away at the last second. Acosta sent the ball back in right away, but Rowe was able to punch the ball out for a corner.

Tesho Akindele and Rooney exchanged chances at either end in the last couple of minutes of the first half, but neither was able to alter the numbers on the scoreboard.

Hamid then had to make a sharp save in the 49th minute, as Mueller and Akindele combined to create an opportunity. Mueller's half volley had plenty of venom on it, but Hamid was able to guide the ball away from danger to keep Orlando off the board.

Leonardo Jara had to make a crucial tackle on Akindele on a cross in the 58th minute in a scramble in front of goal, and Steven Birnbaum then had to slide in to prevent Mueller from firing a shot off from close range to end the calamity in the box.

A long ball from Durkin found Acosta in some space in the 70th minute, but Acosta's shot from just outside the box was caught easily by Rowe. Segura then looked to have United up by two goals in the 73rd minute after a pass from Rodriguez, only for a video review to take the goal off for offside.

Orlando pushed late for an equalizer, but could never find a way past Hamid, giving United their first win in six tries. The win gives the Black-and-Red 30 points from 18 games, ahead of a weekend clash in the District against Toronto FC.
