The United States put up a scoreline that many predicted on Tuesday night, as Gregg Berhalter's side opened up their Gold Cup with a 4-0 win over Guyana at Allianz Field in St. Paul, Minnesota. Paul Arriola opened the scoring in the first half for the USA, and Tyler Boyd scored his first two goals for the team in his second cap after switching allegiances from New Zealand last month.

Gyasi Zardes, who got the start up top and played the entire game, also scored in the second half, notching the third goal of the night for the U.S. with his face. The win put the U.S. atop their group after today's action, with Panama beating Trinidad and Tobago 2-0 in the earlier game.

The only negative for the U.S. side was an apparent hamstring injury to midfielder Weston McKennie in the second half. The Schalke man was replaced by Djordje Mihailovic in the 74th minute and headed straight down to the locker room.

Needing a good performance to ease some of the nerves from two friendly losses before the start of the tournament, the U.S. got off to a slow start before Arriola's goal in the 28th minute. Racing onto a ball from McKennie, Arriola was able to shape his body to smash home a shot for his fourth international goal.

If not for Guyana keeper Akel Clarke, the scoreline at the break could have more heavily favored the U.S. However, saves on Christian Pulisic and Nick Lima kept the Golden Jaguars within striking distance after 45 minutes, though they failed to really ever test Zack Steffen at the other end.

Boyd, who played the second half of the 2018-19 season on loan in Turkey, scored his first goal for the U.S. in the 51st minute. A pinpoint pass from Michael Bradley found Boyd in the box, who cut back against a defender before firing a shot in at the far post.

Arriola's shot in the 55th minute deflected off of a Guyana defender, before then deflecting off of Zardes' face for the 3-0 lead. Boyd then wrapped up the scoring in the 81st minute, collecting a pass from Arriola and then firing the ball in from just outside the box.

The U.S. will next face Trinidad and Tobago on Saturday at FirstEnergy Stadium in Cleveland, Ohio.
