D.C. United had one more chance to end a winless streak before taking a break for the Gold Cup, but the Black-and-Red only managed a point in a 1-1 draw against the San Jose Earthquakes at Audi Field. In front of 18,002 in Washington, D.C., Chris Wondolowski, the hottest striker in MLS, scored in the 37th minute to give the 'Quakes a lead.

Luciano Acosta scored his second goal in two games in the second half to level the scoring, but United couldn't find a winner, running their winless streak to five games, ahead of a three week break in MLS play for the Gold Cup.

Just days after the disappointing draw against the Chicago Fire, head coach Ben Olsen made two changes to his starting lineup. Paul Arriola, upon his return from suspension got a starting nod, as did Jalen Robinson. Out came Chris Odoi-Atsem and Leonardo Jara, as United lined up in a 3-4-2-1 from the start.

Under Matias Almeyda, San Jose play an unusual man-marking system, one which United struggled with mightily in the first half at Audi Field. The Black-and-Red had three shots early on, but were otherwise on the wrong end of San Jose's domination of the first half. Over the course of the 45 minutes, the 'Quakes had a 17-3 shot advantage, and has 58% possession.

Bill Hamid made a couple of saves early on to keep San Jose off the board, including an important save on Wondolowski in the 13th minute. A tricky shot from Valeria Qazaishvilli forced another good save out of Hamid in the 29th minute.

United's keeper then had to make a save on Danny Hoesen in the 31st minute, but wasn't able to hold onto the shot. Wondolowski picked up the loose ball in front of goal, but with has back turned, the striker played the ball back for Hoesen, who had a shot blocked by Frederic Brillant.

San Jose was able to keep up the pressure though, and their reward came in the 37th minute, as Wondolowski scored his seventh goal in the last three games. A cross from Nick Lima on the left allowed Wondolowski to loop around Robinson, and head home his 151st career league goal.

After being thoroughly outplayed in the first half, United came out in their more usual 4-2-3-1 formation, and turned the tide in their favor. First, it was Steven Birnbaum just volleying a shot over from Wayne Rooney's corner in the 53rd minute.

Then, United forced three saves in quick succession out of keeper Daniel Vega. The first, on first half substitute Jara, allowed Acosta a second look that was pushed out for a corner. Rooney's corner was headed out to the top of the box, where Junior Moreno smashed a volley that Vega had to push away from danger.

After Russell Canouse had to depart early in the first half with an injury, United then lost Birnbaum halfway through the second half, after the defender and Florian Jungwirth hit their heads together on a corner. Bleeding from his head, Birnbaum was immediately removed, replaced by Odoi-Atsem.

The Black-and-Red then got their equalizer in the 67th minute, with Acosta notching a goal for the second consecutive game. Jara once again forced Vega into a save, but the keeper allowed a big rebound in the box. Acosta reacted quickly, and slide the shot past Vega for his fifth goal of the season.

Acosta nearly made it two in the 82nd minute, when his strike from just inside the box took a deflection, but skipped just wide of Vega's far post.

There was seven minutes of stoppage time played, but United never came close again to scoring. Wondolowski did finish off a play in the 95th minute for San Jose, but the striker was offside, negating the potential game winning goal.
