D.C. United Announce Signing Of Homegrown Player Griffin Yow

D.C. United announced on Tuesday afternoon that they have signed academy player Griffin Yow, the 12th homegrown player signing in team history. The 16-year-old has played twice for D.C.'s USL side, Loudoun United, and scored in his first start this past weekend, in a 1-1 draw against Memphis 901 FC.

Yow is the third homegrown player that United has signed this year, following Donovan Pines and Antonio Bustamante. All three have played in both games in Loudoun's inaugural season in USL.

"Griffin is a promising young prospect who has grown tremendously in the past 18 months in our Academy,” said Dave Kasper, D.C. United General Manager and VP of Soccer Operations in a statement released by the team.

After coming as a substitute in Loudoun's debut game against Nashville SC, Yow was given the start against Memphis this past weekend by head coach Richie Williams. In the 30th minute, Yow scored this goal, the first ever in club history.

Yow spent the preseason training with D.C. United, and trains with the first team each week. The young forward has also spent time with the USA U-17s, and appeared in the 2018 U-17 Nike Friendlies last fall. He scored a goal for the US side in a 1-1 draw against their Portuguese counterparts. Yow first joined the D.C. United academy in 2016, and scored 41 goals in U.S. Soccer Development Academy games.

Yow' development will likely continue this season with Loudoun United, with the Black-and-Red already well stocked at Yow's best positions. However, with the creation of the team in Loudoun, United can now oversee Yow's development, while also giving him professional experience at the USL level.

"We are incredibly proud of Griffin and his efforts to reach the first team,” Ryan Martin, D.C. United Academy Director, said in the press release. “He's obviously talented but his mentality and drive make him unique."
