West Florida Football Gets 40-10 Homecoming Win Over Chowan
West Florida Football Gets 40-10 Homecoming Win Over Chowan
A balanced performance from quarterback Marcus Stokes helped West Florida to a 40-10 homecoming victory over former conference foe Chowan.

The University of West Florida Argonauts got a visit from their former Gulf South Conference foe Chowan University on Saturday at West Florida’s PenAir Field in Pensacola, Florida, and the night ended with a 40-10 win for UWF, which was significant for multiple reasons.
First, it was homecoming for West Florida, now 6-0, and a win always is the best way to celebrate.
Second, the Argos, ranked fourth in the latest FloCollege D2 Football Rankings, entered the week as one of 12 undefeated teams in NCAA Division II football, and they’ll be on the shorter version of the list heading into Week 7.
Finally, the victory gives West Florida a 4-1 advantage in its all-time series with the Hawks, which kicked off in UWFs debut season of 2016. Chowan won that year, but the Argos triumphed in 2017, 2023, 2024 and now 2025.

Making all but one of West Florida’s pass attempts Saturday, redshirt sophomore quarterback Marcus Stokes provided a balanced attacked for the Argos, passing for four touchdowns and running for two more.
The reigning GSC Offensive Player of the Week was 21 for 34 for 292 yards through the air, which included touchdown strikes of 20, 9, 21 and 46 yards, respectively. He also threw a fourth-quarter interception in the end zone.
A dozen West Florida players had a catch in the game, with redshirt sophomore receiver Corey Scott topping the list with five catches for 67 yards and a touchdown. Javon Swinton hauled in two touchdown passes, and Quinn Sieger grabbed the last one.
On the ground, Stokes rushed six times for 20 net yards and had scores of 1 yard and 8 yards in the first quarter. Redshirt sophomore TJ Lane led the team with 11 attempts for 91 net yards.
The Argonauts dominated the offensive battle Saturday, rolling up 228 rushing yards and 305 yards passing for a 74-play, 533-yard performance that did include the one interception.
Chowan managed just 181 total yards – 67 on the ground and 114 through the air.
West Florida entered the game as the No. 1 rushing defense in Division II football, allowing just 30.4 yards per game through the first five weeks of the 2025 season.
Chowan quarterback NyJal “Jelly” Johnson was 8 for 28 through the air for 114 yards, and he was sacked five times in the game.
Sophomore running back Khamani Barnes accounted for 67 rushing yards and the Hawks’ only touchdown.
The UWF-Chowan matchup was one of 18 games scheduled between the Gulf South Conference and Conference Carolinas across the 2025 and 2026 seasons, per an agreement formalized in late 2024.
The change in the Division II landscape that led to a mass exodus from the Gulf South Conference was the return of football to Conference Carolinas for the first time since the 1974-1975 school year.
Last season, the GSC featured eight teams, including Valdosta State, which fell to Ferris State in the Division II title game.
At the end of the 2024 campaign, four teams left the conference – Chowan, Erskine, North Greenville and Mississippi College. The first three now reside in Conference Carolinas, while the MC program is defunct.
West Florida is one of four teams remaining in the GSC, along with Delta State, Valdosta State and West Alabama.
Since 2000, those three programs have played for the Division II national title 11 times, winning six. Valdosta State claimed the trophy four times, while Delta State and West Florida each have one.
Three of West Florida’s last four games will be GSC contests, with the first being West Alabama next Saturday. Even though there are only four teams in the conference, the 2025 champion still gets an automatic spot in the Division II Playoffs.
West Alabama (5-0) also is one of the unbeaten teams at the Division II level, and the Tigers were idle this week.
Up next for Chowan (2-4, 1-1) is a trip to Barton on Oct. 18 for the first of four consecutive conference games. Barton is 1-5 on the year but picked up the team’s first victory of 2025 on Saturday against Ferrum (34-20).

About Chowan University Football
The Chowan football program has been around since 1993, but the Hawks have only recorded seven winning seasons and another where they were 5-5.
After a 7-4 effort in 2022, Chowan’s final year in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association, the Hawks began a two-year stint that was intended to prepare them for the eventual move to Conference Carolinas.
Chowan was 0-10 in 2023 and 3-7 in 2024.
Life in their new conference hasn’t changed much for the Hawks, who are 2-3 overall this year and coming off a 31-16 homecoming loss to North Greenville.
The last time Chowan beat West Florida was their first meeting in 2016, also the debut season for the Argonauts. UWF won the next three contests, scoring more than 50 points in 2017 and 2023, and earning a 35-6 victory in 2024.
Chowan’s two wins this year came against Elizabeth City State in the season-opener (28-14) and Shorter to kick off conference play on Sept. 27 (30-29).

About West Florida Football
There are 12 undefeated teams in Division II football. Two are in the four-team Gulf South Conference at 5-0 overall. One is West Florida; the other is West Alabama. Their conference mate, Delta State, is 5-1. But as strange as it sounds, last year’s Division II national runner-up, Valdosta State, is 2-3.
Read about all of the teams still undefeated in Division II.
This week’s matchup with Chowan should go in UWF’s favor, but those are the games in which you need to be the most careful and on alert. A win for the Argonauts is crucial, though, especially with West Alabama coming up on Oct. 18 and Delta State on Nov. 1 – and especially with an automatic bid on the line for the conference champion.
In the latest AFCA Division II Coaches Poll, West Florida is ranked third behind Ferris State and Harding. The FloCollege D2 Football Rankings have UWF fourth behind Ferris State, Harding and Kutztown. Both polls are listed below.
Ferris State (2021, 2022, 2024) and Harding (2023) have won the last four Division II titles, but before them? West Florida in 2019, which came after a runner-up finish in 2017.
The Argonauts, who debuted in 2016, have not been just a flash in the pan. West Florida is a perennial power.
UWF is outscoring its opponents this year, 34.8 to 17.8, but that’s not the only interesting fact about the Argonauts. FloCollege analyst Amelia Engstrom breaks it down in this piece about West Florida.
Last week, on the road against Northeastern State, the Argos used a 14-point fourth quarter to escape with a 31-24 victory.
A seven-play, 84-yard drive took four of the last eight minutes of the game and ended with UWF in the end zone for the go-ahead score on a 15-yard pass from redshirt sophomore quarterback Marcus Stokes to redshirt senior receiver Mikaiah Stephenson.
Stokes finished the game 26 of 37 for 332 yards and four touchdowns. He leads the GSC in every passing category, but he also has thrown six interceptions this year.
West Florida’s Corey Scott leads the GSC in receiving with 448 yards on 27 catches for an average of 16.6 per catch and 89.6 per game.
Defensively, UWF is second behind Delta State in every category except fumbles recovered. The Argos have seven, while no other team has more than three.
This is a big week for West Florida as far as not wanting to lose momentum. There’s a lot of important football on the horizon. Plus, it’s homecoming.
