Creighton baseball, which hit the 20-win mark before April, will be aiming to keep its winning energy going against BIG EAST competition when it hosts Butler in each team’s conference-opening series at Charles Schwab Field Omaha—the home of the College World Series—at 7:00pm Friday, 3:00pm Saturday and 12:00pm Sunday (all Eastern Time). The latter two games will be streamed live on FloBaseball

Creighton’s (20-4 overall as of Tuesday evening) spectacular start to the season has seen it emerge as the early threat to take the BIG EAST regular-season title for the first time since 2019, especially considering that preseason favorite UConn (10-15) is slipping badly while Xavier (14-14), which made a Regional final last season and was the only other BIG EAST team in the league’s preseason poll to receive first-place votes, has its own questions.

Conversely, Butler (12-14) hasn’t been putting up eye-popping numbers, but considering that the Bulldogs finished last season with a 12-46 record, Butler is slowly but surely coming along and having the look of a competitive team in the BIG EAST. Just how competitive that team will be remains to be seen, but if the Bulldogs want to make a statement right away to get play in the league started, winning the series against Creighton in Omaha would be one impressive way to do it.

Player to Watch: Dominic Cancellieri, RHP, Creighton

The Bluejays’ ace, who looks well on his way to his third straight season of at least 58 innings pitched, could also be on his way to his first All-BIG EAST honor of his career at the end of the season, too. No one in the league at the moment has more wins (five) without a loss than Cancellieri, who additionally has the lowest ERA (2.83) among qualified hurlers in the BIG EAST along with 35 strikeouts to just 14 walks in 35 innings pitched.

He got the 'W' in one of the Bluejays’ best nonconference wins of the year to date against Portland on March 9, getting the start and going six innings while allowing just two runs against the Pilots. Additionally, he threw a strong seven-inning game (seven hits, two runs allowed, two strikeouts) at Stanford on March 23.

There is the caveat that Cancellieri hasn’t faced BIG EAST hitters yet, sure, but the New Jersey native is more than capable of pulling off some gems against conference opposition. Just look at his game almost exactly one year ago against Villanova, where he was named D1Baseball.com’s National Pitcher of the Week after tossing a one-hitter over eight innings with 12 strikeouts, retiring the last 21 batters he faced. There seems to be an added edge to Cancellieri early on this year after his middling 2-3 record and 5.43 ERA in 2023, and if that spreads into BIG EAST play, Creighton just got a lot more fuel for its push for a conference championship.
