Elon baseball and Campbell baseball, in-state counterparts, square off as Coastal Athletic Association foes for the first time on March 29-21. And the meeting has potentially pivotal implications.

Both the Camels and Phoenix opened conference play looking to make a splash. Their respective first series ended in disappointment.

Campbell, which came into its matchup with Delaware on an eight-game winning streak, went 1-2 against the Blue Hens. With a loss to No. 11-ranked Duke in non-conference play, the result of late-inning struggles from the bullpen, the Camels head to Elon on a rare losing skid.

Elon, meanwhile, endured a tough start to the CAA slate in a sweep at UNC Wilmington.

The Phoenix struggled with hot Seahawks bats, surrendering 28 combined runs over the three-game set. Elon's typically solid pitching staff looks to sustain its bounce-back performance from a 6-1 win over USC Upstate.

Players to Watch

Payton Howard, OF, Campbell

Although the Delaware series may not have gone how Campbell would have liked, Payton Howard had two of his most impressive outings at the plate. Howard extended a hitting streak to seven with at least one knock in every game against the Blue Hens, including outings of three and four hits.

Howard's hitting streak ended against Duke, but his numbers thus far on 2024 suggest he'll rebound quickly. Howard has a .346 batting average, amassed while avoid hitless performances since the opening weekend.

Justin Mitrovich, RHP, Elon

Justin Mitrovich broke out as a freshman for the Phoenix and been even more electric as a sophomore. He has gone without surrendering an earned run in three of his six appearances this season.

Overall, Mitrovich's ERA is a scant 2.65 with a WHIP of just 1.07. He's struck out 10-plus batters in two appearances, mowed down at least eight in four appearances, and struck out no fewer than five over all of his outings on the mound for the Phoenix in 2024.
